Plot Summary
The story centers around Dean Corso, a cynic and jaded book dealer, who is approached by the wealthy and mysterious collector Boris Balkan (Frank Langella). Balkan owns a rare book called The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows, which is said to be the guide for summoning the devil. However, the catch is that there are three copies of this book, and Corso has to authenticate each one.

As Corso travels across Europe trying to solve the mystery, he encounters a number of individuals who possess pieces of the puzzle. Among these individuals are a mysterious woman named Liana Telfer (played by Lena Olin), whose true motives are unknown, and a variety of menacing figures bent on foiling his mission.
